Madame Butterfly Production was astounding, the Principles and rest of cast were wonderful and the staging and costumes were a spectacle. We were fortunate to be able to see this show only after Opera Australia Customer Service sorted out a blunder I had made with the ticketing. They were very kind and generous and allowed us to come down from the country to see the show. We loved it. Thankyou
Personally I didn’t really like the modern take on Madamma Butterfly. I thought the stage and visuals were a bit tacky. Worse still was the quality of the food served before the show. The dinner was extremely disappointing. The wine list was also very limited and fairly ordinary. And why have a New Zealand Chardonnay at an Australian iconic venue? Aren’t there any Australian Chardonnays they could list? On the positive side, the orchestra and singing were great.
My 2 daughters and I saw Madama Butterfly last night at the Sydney Opera House. It was outstanding! The staff was friendly and helpful. The show including the atmosphere, performers, orchestra and scenery, was worth much more than the price of the ticket! It’s an experience that should not be missed!
Digital effects overwhelm the emotional core of Graeme Murphy’s visually striking, design driven interpretation of Puccini’s tragic classic opera. There is some wonderful imagery - like the sequence in which Cio-Cio-San, wearing a flowing white gown, stands on a platform surrounded by enigmatic Japanese typography, that rises optimistically, before it disintegrating at her feet like a deflated lover. The bondage-inspired opening scene when she descends from the clutches of a red spidery web is eye-boggling. The costumes are stunning with a touch of the erotic. But the digitals gee whizzery (10 LED screens exploding with monochrome and colour imagery) is overstated, leading our hearts away from the emotional impact. Instead of being carried away - like Cio-Cio-San - I remained grounded. Less is more. In many ways, I enjoyed this production more in hindsight, when the wonders of the visuals are a vibrant reminder of the spectacle. Musically, the orchestra soars and Mariana Hong (at July 22 performance) stole the show. The sound improved as the production took flight. But there is no question: getting dressed up and going to the Opera is always the most romantic of evenings. The anticipation; the location; walking up the staircase of the iconic Sydney Opera House. What could be more special than sipping bubbles while watching the buzz of Sydney Harbour as the lights from ferries and boats leave a glittering trail. It is simply a must-do experience.
